Obituary:
R.D "Doc" Lyons
1927-2013

A celebration of life for R.D. "Doc" Lyons will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 11AM at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 3700 Union Ave. Bakersfield, CA.
Internment and Honor Guard earlier with family.

Doc went home to the Lord on Monday, April 1st peacefully at home surrounded by his family after a brief struggle with pancreatic cancer.

Doc was born on October 4, 1927 in Ringling, OK to William Proctor Lyons and Ida Virginia Fowler Lyons. He was the 4th of seven children. He attended Claypool School. In 1945 he was drafted into the United States Army where he served as 'medical technician.' He was honorably discharged in 1946.

Doc married his first love, Doris Dean Chamberlain in 1948. They had three beautiful children: Guy Lynn, Deborah Ann and Tracy Don. They had a happy life until Doris passed away in 1987.

Doc began work for Halliburton Oilwell Services in 1950. He worked for 34 years, retiring as "Special Operator" - testing wells. His work took him to Eunice, NM, Whittier, Rio Vista, Avenal and finally Bakersfield, CA, where he retired and stayed.

Doc married his second love, Edith (Edie) Lanner Baugh. They had 25 years of blessings. Doc became a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church where he served the Lord as Deacon, Usher and in countless ways. Doc and Edie even taught several summers of Vacation Bible School. Always in costume and Doc made sets like Noah's Ark that children could enter. Doc loved his garden and always supplied the neighborhood with tomatoes and produce. He was a member on the board of Bakersfield Community Concert and Halliburton Retirees Breakfast and enjoyed the Kern County Retirees luncheons with Edie. He always made friends wherever he went.

Doc was preceded in death by his parents, his first love, Doris, his brother J.P. Lyons; his sisters: Alma Lyons Bennett, Thelma 'Cotton' Lyons Jobe, Lavon Lyons Baucom. He is survived by one brother, Garry LaVirl Lyons, of Waurica, OK; and one sister Carl Murlene 'Biddy' Lyons Ard of Hawesville, KY. He is also survived by his second love, His loving wife, Edith 'Edie' Lyons and his children: Guy Lyons of San Diego; Debbie Ramirez and husband Jerry of Anaheim and Tracy Lyons of Terra Bella and stepson, Frank Evans of Bakersfield. Grandchildren: Aaron Lyons, Michael Ramirez and Veronica Jackson. Three great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Doc loved and served the Lord and was a loving husband and father; a good neighbor and always ready to help anyone. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed by all. We give thanks to the Lord for all His blessings and for our family and Pastor Bill Ekhardt and our Northminster family and many friends and neighbors.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Northminster Presbyterian Church, 3700 Union Ave. Bakersfield, CA 93305 or to Optimal Hospice Foundation, 1675 Chester Ave., Bakersfield, CA 93301.
