Obituary

Edward Wm. (Bill) Edwards

Jesus called Bill to his heavenly home on December 15, 2017 surrounded by Judy and the family. A Celebration of Life service will be held on January 5th at 2 pm, First Presbyterian Church, 1705 17th Street, Bakersfield, Ca.  Internment at National Cemetery will be at 10 am.

Bill Edwards was born on January 11th, 1933, to Ed and Sarah Edwards in Palo Alto, CA. He attended school there until the 5th grade when the family moved to Bass Lake, CA, where Ed served as Postmaster. Bill graduated from Sierra High School, and then attended one year of college in Fresno before enlisting in the Air Force. After basic training, he moved to New York for training to become a Dental Lab Specialist, at Pine Arts & Science in Brooklyn. Upon graduating in February 1954, he returned to Castle Air Force Base to complete his military service, where he was honorably discharged in 1957.

Bill chose Bakersfield to begin his career, eventually starting his own dental lab, Quality Dental Arts with the love of his life, Judy Followwill. After a whirlwind romance, they married on July 2, 1960 and shared 57-years of laughter and love. Bill and Judy were blessed with three children – Karen Schmidt (Jim); Sandy Bergam (Chris); and Tom Edwards (Kelly Perez); their grandchildren – Emily, Maxwell and Sophia Schmidt; Daniel (Aleah), Jacob (Lorrana) and Cassy Bergam; Joshua (Angelica), Justin, TJ and Madison Edwards. Bill is also survived by his lifelong best friend/cousin/best man, Jim Klay (Pat), and many loving family members.

Bill had many joys in life – especially coaching and cheering on his children and grandchildren in softball, baseball, soccer, volleyball, cheerleading and golf. Many family vacations were spent at Bill’s childhood home, Sleepy Hollow, at Bass Lake, and over the years at many other cabins on the lake, always with a couple trips to The Forks for a burger. Bill enjoyed watching sports, playing golf with his grandsons, cards with the guys in Kern City, talking politics, reading his Bible, and especially dancing with Judy. He loved her cooking, and he loved to hold her hand.

Bill will be deeply missed by all his family, and many dear friends – the list of whom seemed to expand exponentially over the years because Bill made friends so easily.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Bill’s honor to Teen Challenge, and Honor Flight Kern County.
